Adrian Lamo, the man who dropped a dime on Chelsea Manning, died this month in Kansas.
The 36-year-old hacker, who had more recently lived as a drifter and who previously was convicted for hacking Microsoft and the New York Times, was approached by then U.S. Army Private Bradley Manning who ended up pilfering and leaking a passel of classified documents in 2013.
Manning was interested in Lamo’s cyberskills, but the hacker eventually turned on the Army private after determine Manning had “done harm to our country that could, in the long run, be just as damaging,” according to a CNET interview. In June 2010, Wired published chat logs between former hacker Lamo and Manning, in which Manning allegedly confessed to being the leaker.
When her sentence was commuted by President Obama during his final days in office, Manning left Ft. Leavenworth Prison on May 17 after serving seven years of a 35-year sentence for leaking government secrets to WikiLeaks.
